OVER THE SUMMER OF 2023, KEEN GARDENERS IN EAST OXFORD
Over the summer of 2023 keen gardeners in East Oxford transformed a walkway between Howard Street and Boundary Brook Road into a joyful flower-filled space. The area sits in a multi cultural community, a bustling and eclectic mix of cultures, the walkway is well used by the community providing access to Lark Rise School, cut through to Florence Park and short cut to the local shops and access to the City Centre.
Lesley and Dawn, known to local children as the "Flower Ladies", adopted the space and planted it with hundreds of flowers. Their enthusiasm and sense of fun has caught on and the area has been transformed- a "lovely place, changed from a concrete alleyway to a peaceful attractive green space".
Passers-by were so taken by the colourful improvements that a bigger, even brighter idea emerged- to use the enormous wall as a canvas. On Saturday 28 October 2023 a rather large addition to the lane was unveiled- a three-storey tall mural by local artist “Lisa Made it”. Over 130 crowdfund donations and community grants paid for the scaffolding, materials, and artist’s work. Comments from the donors show how much joy the project has brought: “It makes me happy every time I go past!”, “This is a really heartwarming project”, “An inspirational project + a very talented artist - what a combination for the greater good of the community!”
At the unveiling, along with the “Flower Ladies” and artist Lisa, a local 5-year-old revealed the sign depicting her nickname for the alleyway, "Flower Lane". A large crowd gathered to meet their neighbours and celebrate the occasion.
Lisa, the talented artist who created the mural, has lived in East Oxford for the past fourteen years and has painted her characteristic artworks in local schools, Barton pedestrian underpass, Florence Park Community Centre, and many other sites. Lisa spent a week painting the design up three storeys of scaffolding. The finished mural is a mixture of the resident's ideas and Lisa's characteristic colourful graphic style. It features details such as creatures requested in memory of local residents, pets, a bespectacled slug, and fossilised oyster shells (which have been found while digging in the area). Also featured, at local children’s request, is Lesley's beloved chocolate Labrador, Tess, who has had a 12-year career as a therapy dog.
Donors to the crowdfund say “So uplifting and beautiful! Thank you for bringing joy and respect to an otherwise dark little alleyway. We are so grateful for your amazing work!”
The event was recorded by local resident and videographer Erika Harlos-Szendrey from Sand&Ray Studio who worked closely with the Flower Ladies and Lisa to chronical the project from start to finish. Guests at the unveiling took home Flower Lady seed packs and purchased Flower Lane gifts including postcards and posters. Proceeds will go towards further projects in the local area
Since the unveiling there has been great excitement about the huge impact the project has had on the community.
Flower Lane was visited in March 2024 by Matthew Barber, Thames Valley Police and Crime Commissioner, he met with local residents to hear how Flower Lane has had a huge positive impact on the community. Funds from the Community Fund were used to pay the costs for the mural.
